History

C riterium-Turner Engineers is part of the Criterium Engineers network, a consulting engineering company with over 65 offices nationwide. Criterium Engineers was established in 1957 to provide engineering reports on the condition of homes. It was one of the first companies to offer such a service in the United States and has been a primary participant in the development of what is now a thriving national home inspection industry.


John P. Turner, Owner Meet John P. Turner, P.E., Owner

Area of Expertise

John Turner is a Multi-Discipline (Architectural and Electrical) Licensed Professional Engineer in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, specializing in building technology and construction. He has diverse experience in all facets of construction. His specialties include residential and commercial inspection, design, energy-efficiency, renovation consulting, condominiums/association properties and forensic engineering.

John has provided these services as Criterium-Turner Engineers since 1993. He and his team are recognized by real estate, consumers, builders, legal and business leaders as the best in the business. John has a proven track record of competence, integrity and commitment as a building inspection engineer.

John is the owner of Criterium-Turner Engineers. He is responsible for development and management of the firm. John is actively involved on a daily basis in building evaluation, design, and architectural engineering. He provides seminars on a variety of topics related to the design, construction and maintenance of buildings.

Qualifications

Before owning and operating the New Hampshire office of Criterium-Turner Engineers, John worked for a sister company, Criterium-Lalancette Engineers in Vermont. John performed hundreds of building pre-purchase inspections. Prior to his engineering experience, John worked as a Construction Foreman. He designed and installed irrigation systems, site drainage and access, landscaping, retaining walls, patios, fences, roads, utility entrances, and a variety of outdoor structures for residential and commercial properties. John also renovated and installed floors, windows, siding, insulation, sills, framing, roofs, chimneys, porches, decks and barns.

John served as the Assistant Building Inspector in Dunbarton, New Hampshire from 2001-2003.

Previously, John worked for Bangor Hydro-Electric Company in Bangor, Maine as a Licensed Energy Advisor. In this capacity he met with customers at their homes to discuss and prioritize energy saving techniques. He gave tours and demonstrations at a model home, and developed renovation plans and conservation programs for customers.

John gained an understanding and knowledge of how to use computers in design and analyzing structural, electrical and mechanical systems through his work at Texas Instruments.

Education

John completed studies in 2004 to earn his Architectural Engineer’s License. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine.

Terry Terry, P.E. Meet Terry Terry, P. E.

Area of Expertise

Terry Terry is a Civil Engineer with over 30 years of engineering experience. During his career he has managed projects ranging from multi-million dollar fast track engineering and construction to small scale housing renovation and upgrades. From this experience, Mr. Terry gained an in depth knowledge of building construction and maintenance. He has inspected a multitude of buildings and projects for compliance with plans, specifications, and codes.

Qualifications

Mr. Terry has been a member of Criterium-Turner Engineers since 1997. During this time he has performed numerous residential and commercial building evaluations along with environmental site assessments and other special studies. His contributions to Criterium-Turner Engineers resulted in his selection as the Criterium-Engineers national Engineer of the Year for 2003.

Before joining the Criterium-Turner Engineers team, Mr. Terry was an officer in the United States Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps until he retired in 1995. He held positions of increasing scope and responsibility in construction management, contracting, and public works administration at Navy and Army commands. He earned several awards for meritorious service during his naval career.

Education and Organizations

Mr. Terry holds both a Bachelor in Science (1974) and a Masters of Engineering (1975) in Civil Engineering from Clarkson College of Technology. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Virginia, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. He is also registered as a Professional Engineer with the National Counsel of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Mr. Terry is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers. He serves on the Town of Enfield, NH Planning Board.


Dick Gurall, P.E. Meet Richard W. Gurall, P.E.

Area of Expertise

Dick Gurall is a Registered Professional Engineer licensed in the State of New Hampshire since 1972. He has diverse experience in all facets of building design and construction. His specialties include residential and commercial inspection, structural design and specification, sitework engineering, renovation consulting and environmental remediation.

Qualifications

Before joining the office of Criterium-Turner Engineers, Dick worked for Public Service of New Hampshire, the state’s major electric utility company, for over 32 years. At PSNH, he held the positions of Senior Engineer, Property Manager and Construction Engineer. He designed and supervised construction of the Seabrook Station Education Center, Seabrook Training Center, and many PSNH office and service facilities. Before retiring from PSNH in 2002, Dick was responsible for construction of the Energy Park, the PSNH corporate headquarters. As property manager at PSNH, Dick was responsible for construction and maintenance of all PSNH non-power generating facilities. Dick is very familiar with the architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical requirements of building design and construction.

Previously, Dick worked for the State of New Hampshire Department of Public Works and Highways as a Civil Engineer in the Design Division, Construction Division and in the Department Computer Center.

Dick has been involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition for over ten years as a volunteer, mentor and team coordinator. FIRST Robotics is a high school program that requires teams of students and mentor engineers to design and construct radio controlled robots that compete in nationwide competitions.

Education

Dick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He has taken Construction Management courses at the University of Wisconsin and Northeastern University.

Denny Townson, P.E. Meet Denny R. Townson, P. E.

Area of Expertise

Denny obtained his registration as a Professional Engineer in Louisiana over 25 years ago. His engineering career has provided experience in the design and construction of control systems, electrical power distribution systems, and high frequency communication systems. He also has considerable experience in the construction and maintenance of mechanical equipment and structures operating in hazardous commercial environments.

Denny joined Criterium-Turner Engineers in 2002 and is responsible for conducting residential and commercial building evaluations, environmental assessments, capital reserve studies, and other special engineering studies and assessments.

Prior to joining Criterium-Turner Engineers, Denny, most recently, worked in the field of management consulting, assisting clients in the analysis of their business operations. He worked with executives as well as with shop floor people to analyze and improve operations, equipment, procedures, and processes.

Qualifications and Education

Denny holds a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla, Missouri. He is a registered Professional Engineer in New Hampshire and Louisiana. He has received training on the requirements of residential inspection techniques and requirements as specified by the National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers, and the American Society of Home Inspectors and on the inspection requirements for commercial and environmental assessments as specified by the American Society for Testing Materials.


JOSEPH L. MULLEDY, P.E. Meet JOSEPH L. MULLEDY, P.E.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Joe Mulledy is a Licensed Professional Engineer in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He has 10 years of engineering experience in the public, private and industrial sectors. Project experience includes construction management/inspection, geotechnical and environmental studies/investigations, sewerage and drainage system design and construction, municipal project planning, management and construction and roadway, sidewalk, multi-use trail, highway, and site/civil design.

QUALIFICATIONS

Prior to joining Criterium-Turner Engineers, Joe worked in private consulting on many levels in the planning, design and construction of engineering projects including site development of private residential and commercial properties, municipal sewerage and drainage works improvements and highway design for State Departments of Transportation throughout New England.

As a City Engineer for the City of Nashua, New Hampshire, Joe directed the planning, management and construction of large municipal projects as well as in emergency response to disasters such as floods, building failures and roadway failures.

Previously, Joe was the assistant building inspector for the Town of Candia, New Hampshire, from 2002-2003. As the Assistant Building Inspector, Joe was responsible for many aspects of Zoning and Building Code enforcement.

JAMES A. SPIEGEL, AIA Meet JAMES A. SPIEGEL, AIA

Area of Expertise

James has obtained his registration as an Architect in Maine, New Hampshire and New York. He has over twenty years of experience in providing public and private clients with exemplary design and planning services. James has extensive large-scale Civic, Public Transportation, Healthcare and Research, Education, University, Corporate, Historic Restoration and Library-based projects. James is committed to providing the best possible solutions and minimizing environmental impact. He is an advocate of employing cutting edge sustainable building practices, building science, team work and creativity.

James joined the Criterium-Turner Engineers team in 2006 and is responsible for architectural design and evaluation, conducting residential and commercial building evaluations and other special architectural and engineering studies and assessments.

James is president and principal in charge of J5 Architects PLLC Manchester, New Hampshire.

He has worked with such prestigious architectural firms as Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott Architects, Boston, MA, Dean Tucker Shaw Architects, Boston, MA, Notter Finegold and Alexander Architects, Boston, MA and Drummey Rosane Anderson Architects, Newton, MA.

Qualifications and Education

James holds a B. F. A. in Industrial Design from Rochester Institute of Technology in Industrial and Interior Design from 1984 and AAS Graphic Design and Glass Design from 1982 from the Rochester Institute of of Technology in Rochester, NY. He is a registered Architect in New Hampshire, Maine and New York.
